Swiss paper Blick will probably reintroduce the broadsheet format in October of this year. Main reason for the way back to the old format is “to differentiate the paper from free newspapers” according to Ringier director Marc Walder.

Blick is now printed in one (small) tabloid section with the sports part in the back of the paper printed upside down – so you have to turn the paper over to read it. Sharing the paper with others is impossible. The new format will have a separate sports section. (Persoenlich)

One of the papers Blick wants to differentiate from is its own free evening paper Blick am Abend, which will continue to be printed in small tabloid format. All other Swiss free dailies (20 Minuten, .ch and News) have also this small ‘kleinzeitung’ format.

Ringier is not sure it will continue free business daily CASH. Ringier CEO Christian Unger told Persoenlich that the paper is losing money although market share and readership is growing. Having only the online version is also not viable, support by print is still needed – Ringier expects, however, that the online version could be profitable within two years.
