주성하 기자와의 대화는 늘 새롭습니다. 북한은 우리에게 가장 가까운 나라인데도 우리는 그 나라에 대해 거의 아는 게 없었습니다. 우리는 그 곳에서도 사람들이 휴대전화를 쓰고, 쌍꺼풀 수술이 유행하고 있다는 당연한 사실 등을 주 기자로부터 들으며 지난 6년을 늘 새로운 하루처럼 보내곤 했습니다. 남한 사회에 대한 그의 낯섬이 우리에겐 신선함이었던 겁니다.
지난해 저널로그 서비스를 시작하면서 동아일보 식구들만이 누리던 그 작지만 알찬 즐거움을 독자 여러분들께도 나눠드릴 수 있게 됐습니다. 바로 주 기자의 블로그 ‘서울에서 본 평양이야기’ 덕분입니다.
주 기자의 기사는 대체로 가슴이 아픈 경우가 많습니다. 칠보산에 송이버섯을 따기 위해 강제 동원돼야 하는 북한 주민들의 실상이 그랬고, 오늘 아침 동아일보에 게재된 일부 북한 내 부유층을 위한 초호화 아파트 기사가 그랬습니다. 사회주의 지상낙원은 커녕 굶어죽는 사람 옆에서 초호화 생활을 누리는 일부가 존재하는 사회의 이야기는 너무 무겁고 괴로운 이야기였습니다.
하지만 서울에서 본 평양 이야기에는 동아일보 지면에 정색을 하고 소개하기에는 조금 가볍고 편안한 이야기들이 많이 담겨 있습니다. 첫 글부터 반응이 뜨거웠답니다. 제목은 ‘고추장에 빠진 명태 구하기’였죠. 주 기자는 북한의 작은 어촌 마을이 고향인지라 생태탕을 매우 좋아합니다. 그런데 그런 주 기자가 보기에 남한의 생태탕은 ‘생태가 들어간 해물탕’이었던 거죠. 슴슴한 북한식 생태탕에 익숙한 주 기자는 명태와 양념만 넣고 끓인 북한식 생태탕 조리법을 소개했습니다. 반응은 폭발적이었습니다. 댓글이 줄을 잇고, 조회수가 치솟았죠.
요즘 주 기자의 관심은 남한 사회 곳곳으로 펼쳐집니다. 북한에서 대학 등에서 교편을 잡았던 주 기자가 바라보는 남한의 교육 문제, 북한 사람의 시각으로 바라본 남한 사회의 수많은 갈등과 조정의 과정… 우리와 비슷하면서도 다른 그의 시각에 많은 블로거들이 링크를 걸기 시작했고, 방문자가 날마다 늘어나는 중이랍니다.
이렇게 블로그에는 재미있는 얘기가 가득하지만, 사실 그 이야기 뒤 주 기자의 인생은 그리 쉽지만은 않았습니다. 주 기자는 늘 바닥에서 시작했고, 맨손으로 한 계단, 한 계단 걸어 올라왔습니다. 주 기자의 고향 마을은 북한에서는 가난한 어촌에 불과합니다. 생선이 잡혀서 굶어 죽을 걱정은 덜 해도 되지만, 평양에서 출세할 가능성도 꿈꾸기가 어려운 곳입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 주 기자는 노력을 통해 당당히 주석궁이 내려다보이는 김일성대에 진학합니다. 당 간부의 자제도 아닌데 김일성대에 들어간다는 건 남한에서 서울대에 입학하는 것보다 더 힘든 일일 겁니다.
하지만 남한에 내려온 주 기자는 다시 바닥으로 굴러 떨어졌습니다. 이 사회에서 그에게는 아무 것도 할 일이 없었습니다. ‘물에 빠져 죽더라도 이건 내 전재산이니 꼭 지켜야한다’며 비닐로 꽁꽁 싸 가슴에 끈으로 단단히 동여맨 채 국경을 헤엄쳐 건너면서까지 들고 내려왔던 김일성대 졸업장. 하지만 이 졸업장은 남한 사회에서는 전혀 쓸 데가 없었습니다. 그는 결국 막노동으로 밥벌이를 시작합니다. 그리고 거기서부터 차근차근 계단을 밟아 오릅니다. 그리고 이번에는 청와대를 바라보고 서 있는 동아일보에 입사했습니다.
주 기자는 여전히 중간에 서 있는 중간자입니다. 비록 몸은 서울에 두 발을 딛고 있지만, 그가 국제부에서 바라보는 가장 중요한 관찰 대상은 남한 사회가 아닌 평양과 북한 사회입니다. 거의 10년에 가까운 세월을 보내며, 이제는 남한 사회에 적응했을 법도 한데, 그럼에도 불구하고 주 기자는 여전히 이 사회에서 나고 자란 사람들과 다른 정서를 갖고 있습니다. 분단 이후 60년을 서로 다르게 살아온 북의 2000만과 남의 4000만에게는 이렇게 서로를 이해할 수 있도록 도와주는 중간자들의 존재가 절실합니다. 서울에서 쓰는 주 기자의 평양 이야기가 남과 북의 평화와 통일을 앞당겨 주길 기대해 봅니다.
